Why is taking risks so frightening? How is it that we become so wrapped up in the “what if” that we are willing to jeopardize the opportunity to evolve into a better version of ourselves?
Today was a typical Sunday. I attended service and spent quality time with my children before finishing a project at home. It wasn’t until I began resetting our home for the upcoming week that I remembered a promise I had made to God. The realization was overwhelming, and I had to sit and process the emotions that followed.
It has been a year since the Lord instructed me to move in a new direction. Despite receiving every possible sign, I have continued to make excuses to stay put. Changing course is challenging; it pulls us out of our comfort zones and forces us to learn new ways of being. I often overlook my own potential and question why the Lord would call me to certain places, as if I am not worthy of His calling. Anyone with a relationship with Christ knows this doubt is the voice of the enemy, yet it remains difficult to combat—especially when you feel you have no “warriors” to lean on.
Warriors in faith know to trust God more than their own understanding. Scripture reminds us that while the enemy seeks to deter us, God is victorious. Recently, my cousins and I discussed combating sin. While they suggested that prayer cannot always bring change, I disagree. Sin can feel comfortable until you move closer to God. We cannot expect God to fix issues if we continue making the same choices; much like brushing your teeth while continuing to eat candy, the risk of damage remains.
Many of us resist change because we fear the unknown, choosing to remain in old habits even when they cost us our peace, happiness, and freedom. This is why community support is vital. Battling sin and fear is not easy, and we need others to pray for us when we cannot find the strength to do so ourselves.
This year, let’s challenge ourselves to put ourselves out there. If the Lord is calling you to start a podcast, a blog, or a business, take that leap of faith. If He is calling you to apply for a new position, start a family, or begin dating again, go for it. Fear does not come from the Lord, and we are called for so much more than mere contentment. What if that next step brings you everything you have been praying for?
Until next time,
