As we enter a new year, it’s a natural time to reflect on the past and set new strategies. While many focus on financial goals or complex plans, my primary goal is simple: to draw closer to Jesus—not just claiming the title of Christian, but truly living in a way that reflects a deep dedication to Him.
If I have one vital takeaway from 2025, it is the realization that true happiness is found only within my relationship with Him. Last year, I set many personal goals—saving money, dieting, improving patience—but by summer, these efforts had stalled. While some might call this a lack of discipline, I recognize it as losing the battle against my own human nature.
When we follow Christ, His faithfulness completes us. Old habits naturally subside as our desire to be near Him grows. We seek out environments where we can feel His presence, which guides our choices. We begin to understand His grace for us, which in turn gives us the patience and understanding to offer grace to others. The very things we try and fail to fix through self-effort, God can effortlessly wash away.
I often hear the question, “If He can wash it away, why does He allow it?” We must remember that God gives us free will. We cannot blame Him for the consequences of sin when He has warned us about them. It seems we often apply a double standard here, holding ourselves accountable to our bosses or parents but not to God. Yet, Jesus is the only one we can rebel against and put on the back burner, who will openly welcome us back without a grudge when we are ready to put Him first. How could anyone not desire to be close to someone like that?
The older I get, the more I crave peace. Chasing after worldly trends is exhausting and often erodes my confidence, pushing me into the very patterns I want to escape. My focus for this year is not on unrealistic goals or get-rich schemes, but on finding peace in what I already have, remaining present with those who matter, and drawing closer to the one who loves without contingency. The temporary satisfaction of “likes,” follows, or material possessions can never compare to the unshakable peace found in our Savior.
This year, focus on being an individual. Don’t worry if you don’t fit in, as long as you are happy. Try not to take things personally; we all have seasons that require us to separate and reflect. Instead of getting discouraged when others succeed, use the opportunity to pray for them—you don’t know the journey it took for them to get their “yes.” Focus on what you can control, and when faced with challenges, intentionally find one positive aspect. The best part is that you don’t need a cheat sheet or an expensive workshop to focus on the blessings God has already given you—that alone is a simple way to get closer to Jesus.
Until next time,
